The The Art of Wreck-It Ralph (Chronicle Books) is released in the US today, and it represents the most complex book I’ve worked on to date. The movie takes place within a number of very different environments, so it made sense to design each chapter to reflect those worlds. The result is essentially 5 books in 1. Be sure to check out the movie which comes out tomorrow. The animators at Walt Disney Animation really outdid themselves this time!

We recently had the pleasure of creating the identity for Everson Royce, a new retail wine store in Old Pasadena. Started by Randy and April (two of the owners of Silverlake Wine) and their buddy Joe, they specialize in boutique wine, spirits, and beer from around the world, plus excellent, friendly customer service. Stop by this weekend and enjoy a glass of vino at the bar. Tell them SMOG sent you!

The first thing they told us was that they didn’t want a traditional wine shop logo. NO burgundy, NO metallic gold, and if we included any wine references, they should be very subtle. If you’re not paying attention, you may never spot the hidden wine glass in the logo.

As an added bonus, we got to work with Ana Henton of MASS Architecture, who did an incredible job designing the space. (She kicks some serious design ass.)

Three Boys From Pasadena

I am happy to announce the opening of my friends Mark Arbeit, George Holz and Just Loomis photography retrospective at Art Center College of Design on Thursday June 14. Three Boys From Pasadena is a beautiful exhibit chronicling over 30 years of their individual work and ongoing friendship with Helmut Newton. The show was originally curated by June Newton and first shown at Helmut Newton’s Foundation in Berlin.

Congratulations to John Mayer on his #1 album – Born And Raised. The beautiful artwork was created by David A. Smith, a traditional ornamental glass artist (amazingly gifted + incredibly humble guy) working in Torquay, Devon. SMOG helped out with the packaging layouts and we’re very proud to have played even a small role in bringing another great JM record to the fans. Check out “Queen of California”, “If I Ever Get Around to Living” and “Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey”.

Congrats to Garbage on the release of their first new album in 7 years – “Not Your Kind of People” – and darklings it was worth the wait. We had a grand old time time working with Shirley and the band on the creative campaign for this project. The packaging includes killer photos by Autumn de Wilde, amazing bone assemblages by Ryan Corey, and much more. Finally, we can share some of it with you.

The Dallas Show

“Ed Fella, please report to the lost and found”

If you’re familiar with Ed Fella’s work, you might know of what he calls his “after-the-fact” flyers—when a visiting artist would come to lecture at CalArts, Ed would create an announcement flyer long after the event was over. Back in 1995 when I was attending CalArts, SMOG came and spoke to the students and Ed proceeded to design his flyer, but never finished it because of a flood in his studio.

I ran into Ed last year and he told me he had found some of the beginnings of his SMOG flyer, but it was water damaged and missing the “G”. When he offered it to us, I emphatically said yes! So we finally received it today, complete with a newly drawn “G”. Thanks Ed!
